Duxbury Colonial Transformation
Kitchen Remodel
Project Description:
Woodland transformed this Duxbury, MA, home by expanding the kitchen, improving the transition to the 3-season porch that was underutilized, and creating a much-needed mud room. The kitchen had a few challenges, including it was outdated and cramped, there was no seating for the family of 4, and it lacked storage. After spending time in London, the homeowners were looking for a contemporary feel and that is exactly what we successfully delivered. First, we expanded and doubled the size of the kitchen taking it from 192 sf to 448 sf by taking over the part of the family room that abutted the kitchen. In addition, we concealed a wood burning fireplace that truly just took up space. Focused on a minimalist look, we incorporated Birch, semi-custom, white shaker style cabinets on the bottom of the exterior wall of the kitchen, along with LG Quartz countertops throughout. This allowed us to create a statement backsplash wall of Marble, White Quarry split face tile. The split face and honed finish of the tile allow the natural veins, swirls, and flecks to be the star of this kitchen, along with groutless installation, and no trim windows to streamline the minimalistic appeal. Centered in the space is a beautiful statement island finished in a Walnut countertop with seating for 4 and ample storage. Finishing off this space is a large floor to ceiling pantry, a custom, built-in desk, and floors that ground the space in a dark stain. The next major area of improvement was expanding the house into the garage, thus allowing us to go from a 100 sf to a 500 sf mudroom. The mudroom features 12×24, Mapios, Light Pewter, slate tiles in a staggered pattern, two closets, bench seating, and custom storage cubbies for each family member. The last part of this project included remodeling the 3-season porch that was underutilized, in poor condition, and transitioned awkwardly in height (creating a tripping hazard). We not only improved this transition but made other energy efficiency upgrades to the space allowing the kitchen to expand into the former family room and the 3-season porch into a 4-season family room.
